Thuru Mithuru to colour Sri Lanka green with a million more trees.

We at AFC celebrated the World Environment Day by taking a step to restore what our planet urgently needs- trees. On 5th June 2018, we gave ourselves a purpose larger than life; to plant one million trees by 2023. On the World Environment day 2018 we have planted 176,518 plants, with the help of over 370,000 school children from 991 schools across the island. To date, we have planted over 215,000 trees, all over Sri Lanka including the in the schools, religious premises, urban councils and expressways.

Our current pledge is to plant one million more trees by 2023, in our environmental sustainability endeavour to make our country greener…

Through our initiatives we are also contributing to achieve Sri Lanka’s Bonn challenge; that is to increase the forest cover of Sri Lanka to reach 32% by 2030. With the one million tree planting project AFC will contribute 5% to this national goal single-handedly.

Why is tree planting so important, one may ask?

Trees are like the vacuums of our planet. They absorb Carbon Dioxide - the main culprit of Global Warming and release clean oxygen for us to breathe. A fully grown tree can absorb approximately 22Kgs of Carbon dioxide annually, and carbon absorption 50 trees are equivalent to the annual average carbon dioxide emission of any motor vehicle – May it be a luxurious four-wheeler or a simple Tuk…

A single tree can be home to hundreds of species of insect, fungi, moss, mammals, and plants. Depending on the kind of food and shelter they need, different forest animals require different types of habitat. Without trees, forest creatures would have nowhere to call home.

Trees play a key role in capturing rainwater and reducing the risk of natural disasters like floods and landslides. Their intricate root systems act like filters; removing pollutants and slowing down the water’s absorption into the ground. This process prevents harmful waterside erosion and reduces the risk of over-saturation and flooding.
